what i can do for you

I’m a spoken word poet or a performance poet or whatever you wanta call it. Just not a slam poet, I don’t think I slam enough to qualify as such. Therefore I’m more than open to bookings for show across the US and into Canada. Contact me for pricing and for contracts. I can and will work with you to get whatever we feel is best for your particular situation. I’d love to see your face at your venue soon.

I also do workshops, especially focusing on spoken word poetry for youth. As someone who’s been playing this game on and off for awhile since the onset of puberty and as someone who’s organized spoken word organizations and events, I’ve seen just about every type of workshop that young spoken word artists will get exposed to, and have come up with my own. These can be made to fit to your particular needs, whether it be starting a bunch of people writing and performing for the first time, organizing a spoken word club or slam, and even more advanced workshops for group performance.

stuff you can do for me

love poem to an asian women series (as an ideal): in trying to explore the concept of identity, i’ve been trying to come to grasp with the fact that it’s very often small events that shape us irrevocably, as if we were sculpture and one small chip changes the entire composition.

as such, i’m asking that if you’re an asian woman, that you please email me a description of a few experiences that you feel shaped your identity as the person you are today. they can be long or short, but please be as detailed as you can. email them at vinh [at] vinh-hua [dot] com. as this can be sensitive, feel free to email me anonymously.

these experiences will be used to inform a series of poems about asian and asian american women.

why particularly asian women? firstly because ‘love poem to a vietnamese woman’ where i tried to explore the identities of vietnamese girls is still one of my favorite poems. furthermore, i’m hoping that by writing about asian women, i can separate more of myself away from the material and explore the subject more thoroughly. some of it is admittedly arbitrary. i kinda wanta write a poem to my momz and itll be part of this series.

introspective musicology: the soundtrack to our lives. we all have them, some strange mixture of karaoke classics, queen-level ballads, heart thumping hip hop and head banging metal. the purpose of IM is exploring how one relates to these soundtracks, how an artist can understand another, not through interaction, but through those tracks that the individual feels is significant to their lives. it is an examination to symbolic meaning, as well as how individual pieces can create a collective whole.

as such, the artist wishes for those who can to make a mixtape which the subject feels is an appropiate soundtrack to their life at that point in time. the mixtape should be no more than 15 songs and should encompass the entirety of the individual’s character, history and being, however the subject wishes that to be defined.

Craigslist postings poem: I am fascinated with craigslist… it’s just too crazy not to be fascinating. in between the obvious bots, in the personals and the discussion section, i feel that the veil of anonymity has allowed for so much genuine human emotion, as people say whatever the hell they want, as they want to say it. Yes, I troll craigslist postings for entertainment. You do it too. You know it, admit it. Now you can put that time to work, because if you find a particularly dope posting, be it a missed connection, or looking for hookup or some political philosophic rant, send it to me and you might just see it end up in a craigslist community poem.

Zhoo Zhitzu Brasiliero: As some of you know, I’m a BJJ player. A fanatical almost religious BJJ player. As such, if anyone is interested in learning about jiu jitsu, playing it or competing in it, give me a heads up. If you’re interested in watching me compete, hit me up. And the most important thing you can do for me… email me, send me a kick in the ass to keep training, keep pushing and keep to the diet. put down that bowl of white rice and char siu fat boy!
